Domestic Hardwoods
Domestic hardwood refer to deciduous trees growing in North America, which means they shed their leaves in the winter.
North American hardwoods vary by region due to a diverse climate in the United States. In the Northeast, you will find hardy species such as Hard and Soft Maple, Cherry and White Oak. These trees tolerate a short growing season, cold winters and low light conditions from shade. This slow growth produces woods with very tight growth rings which increases stability. In the Appalachian region, you’ll find Ash, Hickory, Red Oak, Birch and Walnut. Trees in this region tend to grow larger and produce wider and longer boards when processed. In Western region, you’ll find mostly softwoods, with the exception of Alder, a hardwood that grows in this region.
